Be A Middle School Mentor 2019
United Way’s Be A Middle School Mentor (BAMSM) is looking for caring adult mentors to encourage and support middle school students entering the program for the 2019-2020 school year. We work with students in five school districts across Allegheny County: Pittsburgh Public Schools, Clairton, McKeesport, West Mifflin, and Woodland Hills.
Mentoring sessions run from October through May for approximately 45 minutes to an hour each week, either during lunch or after school. BAMSM site coordinators are present at each mentoring session to provide activities for mentor/mentee matches. Activities typically focus on themes such as career exploration, college, life skills, and goal-setting, and sometimes include group activities.
Mentors undergo a thorough application, screening and interview process before being matched with students. Mentors are required to complete a PA background check, child abuse clearance, and FBI clearance prior to being approved to volunteer. Mentors also attend a 3-hour training and are offered additional training opportunities throughout the year.
